Starting IPL in June: what results can you expect by August?

You're not the first person to Google this in early June, and the honest answer is yes, with a reservation that's less about the technology and more about your hair being on its own schedule. Let's walk through what that actually looks like.

What happens between June and August

The part that trips most people up is that your hair doesn't grow all at once. At any given moment, only about 10 to 30 percent of your follicles are in the active growth phase, which is the only window where IPL can do its thing. The rest are on break, completely unbothered by your plans for smooth legs. That's not a design flaw; it's just how hair works, and it's why you need several sessions spaced about two weeks apart to catch different groups of follicles as they cycle in.

Starting in early June with sessions every two weeks, here's roughly how it plays out:

Session 1 (early June). You treat, and then nothing visible happens. The light did its job on the active follicles, but those hairs are still hanging around and won't shed for another week or so. This is the part where your patience gets tested and you have to resist the urge to decide the device is broken. It's not.

Session 2 (mid-June). Around this time, the hairs from your first session start shedding. You might notice them in the shower or when you're getting dressed. It's not a lot, because remember, your first session only caught that 10 to 30 percent. But the patches where those hairs were? They stay smooth. Meanwhile, this second session catches a fresh batch of follicles that just woke up and cycled into the active phase.

Session 3 (early July). This is usually when people go from "is this even doing anything?" to "oh wait, this is actually doing something." The treated areas are looking visibly thinner. You're shaving less, and the stubble that used to appear overnight is taking a few extra days. It's the kind of difference that you notice when you're putting on shorts and realize you haven't thought about shaving in longer than usual.

Sessions 4 and 5 (mid-July to early August). The results start stacking. Clinical studies on at-home IPL show that consistent biweekly sessions produce meaningful hair reduction within this timeframe. Some areas look almost clear; others still have finer, lighter regrowth. That patchiness is completely normal, it's just your follicles being on different schedules, and the upcoming sessions will keep evening things out.

The summer sun situation

Starting IPL in summer means being a little smarter about sun exposure, because sunlight and your IPL device are both interested in the same thing: melanin (the pigment in your skin and hair). When your skin picks up extra pigment from a tan or a sunburn, the device has a harder time telling the difference between the pigment in your hair and the pigment in your skin, which raises the risk of irritation or temporary darkening in the treated area.

None of this means you have to spend the summer indoors. It means:

  • Before a session: Keep the treatment area out of direct sun for 48 hours. The bikini line mostly takes care of itself here (thanks, swimsuit), but legs and arms need a bit more planning.

  • After a session: Same deal, 24 to 48 hours of keeping that skin out of direct sun. The easiest move is treating in the evening so the most sensitive window passes while you sleep.

  • All summer: SPF 30 or higher on exposed treatment areas when you're outside. You're probably doing this anyway, but now you have one more good reason.

Where you'll be by August (honestly)

After four to five biweekly sessions, most people have:

  • Noticeably thinner hair in the treated areas, with some spots staying smooth between sessions

  • Slower regrowth, meaning the razor is coming out of the drawer a lot less often

  • Finer, lighter hairs where regrowth does happen, so even what's left is less visible

  • A real head start, but not the finish line

You won't be completely hair-free by August, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something. A full IPL course runs 8 to 12 sessions, so by early August you're about halfway through. But halfway through is a genuinely different experience than where you started. You'll spend less time on hair removal, feel more comfortable in a swimsuit, and know that every session from here is building on what you've already done.

Why the real payoff comes in fall

Think of June as planting, not harvesting. Everything you do this summer, every biweekly session you show up for, is catching a new round of follicles and moving them out of the active cycle. By September and October, you'll have completed 8 to 10 sessions, and the remaining hairs are so fine and sparse that occasional maintenance is all you need.
